Colorado SOMB Treatment Group

Accountability-Focused, Trauma-Informed, and Standards-Aligned Care

We are proud to offer a Colorado SOMB Sex Offense Specific Treatment (SOST) group, developed in alignment with the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB) Standards and Guidelines. This program is designed for individuals who are court-ordered or voluntarily seeking specialized treatment that prioritizes community safety, accountability, and long-term risk reduction.

Our group meets the expectations of Colorado's containment model by emphasizing offense responsibility, structured treatment targets, collaboration with supervising agencies, and ongoing risk management, while also integrating evidence-based, trauma-informed clinical approaches when appropriate.

Alignment with Colorado SOMB Standards

This program is structured to support core SOMB treatment principles, including:
  • Acceptance of full responsibility for sexually abusive behavior
  • Identification of offense cycles, dynamic risk factors, and cognitive distortions
  • Development of relapse prevention and safety plans
  • Victim empathy and understanding of harm
  • Ongoing accountability, transparency, and compliance
  • Collaboration with probation/parole, polygraph providers, and other members of the containment team
  • Documentation and reporting consistent with supervision requirements
Treatment is delivered in a structured group format, facilitated by licensed clinicians familiar with Colorado SOMB expectations and the ethical boundaries of sex-offense-specific work.

Integrating Trauma-Informed & Evidence-Based Specialties

While offense accountability remains central, Colorado SOMB standards also recognize that many individuals in treatment have complex trauma histories, co-occurring substance use disorders, and emotional regulation deficits that can increase risk if left unaddressed. Our program integrates these components without bypassing accountability or minimizing offenses.

EMDR (Used Carefully & Appropriately)

EMDR is not used to process offense behavior or reduce responsibility. Instead, when clinically appropriate and approved within the treatment plan, EMDR may be utilized to:
  • Address non-offense-related trauma that contributes to emotional dysregulation
  • Reduce trauma-driven reactivity that increases risk factors
  • Improve affect tolerance and impulse control
All EMDR work occurs in alignment with SOMB standards, with clear treatment goals, containment-model awareness, and coordination as required.

Trauma-Informed Treatment

We recognize that unresolved trauma can intensify cognitive distortions, shame cycles, and maladaptive coping, increasing risk rather than reducing it. Trauma-informed care in this program:
  • Does not excuse or justify harmful behavior
  • Supports increased self-regulation and emotional awareness
  • Helps participants remain engaged in accountability-based work rather than shutting down or escalating

Somatic Therapy & Regulation Skills

Somatic and body-based interventions are incorporated to:
  • Improve nervous system regulation
  • Increase awareness of early warning signs and physiological risk cues
  • Strengthen participants' ability to pause, ground, and make safe choices
These skills directly support relapse prevention and self-management, consistent with SOMB treatment goals.

Substance Use & Addiction Treatment Integration

Substance use is well-documented dynamic risk factor for sexual reoffense. Our program integrates substance use assessment and intervention to:
  • Identify patterns where substances lower inhibition or increase risk
  • Support sobriety and recovery as part of the overall safety plan
  • Coordinate with outside substance use treatment when indicated

Group Structure

  • Format: Open group
  • Length: 90 minutes
  • Frequency: Weekly
  • Population: Adult men convicted of sexual offenses
  • Facilitation: Licensed SOMB clinicians experienced in SOMB treatment
Attendance, participation, and compliance are documented and can be shared with supervising authorities as required.

Our Treatment Philosophy

We believe that community safety is strengthened through structured, ethical, and evidence-informed treatment. This group is designed to be:
  • Firm on accountability
  • Clear on expectations
  • Collaborative within the containment model
  • Clinically responsive to risk-relevant trauma and substance use issues
Participants are expected to engage honestly, follow supervision requirements, and actively participate in the work of change.
